ANC vs ENC: What Noise Cancelling Actually Does (and What It Does Not)

Two acronyms appear on nearly every earbud box, one letter apart, and they do completely different jobs. Buying the wrong one is the single most common source of "these aren't what I expected".

ANC — Active Noise Cancellation

ANC is for you. It reduces the noise you hear.

Microphones on the earbud listen to sound arriving from outside, and the electronics generate an inverted version of that waveform. Played into your ear alongside the noise, the two partially cancel out. The physics is genuinely clever and genuinely limited.

ANC works best on constant, low-frequency sound: aircraft cabin drone, bus engines, air conditioning, generator hum, fan noise. These are predictable waveforms, so the system can model and cancel them well.

ANC works poorly on sudden, high-frequency sound: someone talking near you, a car horn, cutlery on plates, a door slamming. By the time the system has modelled the sound, it has already finished. This is why a plane feels dramatically quieter but a noisy café does not go silent.

A well-implemented ANC system in earbuds might cut around 20–30 dB in the frequencies it handles best. That is a large, obvious difference on a bus. It is not silence, and any product promising silence is overselling.

Passive isolation does a lot of the work

Before any electronics are involved, a correctly sized ear tip that seals the ear canal blocks a surprising amount of noise — particularly the mid and high frequencies ANC struggles with. Most people never try the other tip sizes in the box. If your ANC seems weak, change the tips before blaming the earbuds. A poor seal also thins out the bass, so a good fit fixes two complaints at once.

Transparency mode

The same microphones can run the process in reverse, deliberately feeding outside sound in so you can hold a conversation or hear traffic without removing the buds. If you walk or cycle in traffic, this is a genuine safety feature and worth having.

ENC — Environmental Noise Cancellation

ENC is for the person on the other end of the call. It does nothing for what you hear.

ENC uses multiple microphones to work out which sound is your voice and which is background, then suppresses the background before transmitting. On a windy street or in a busy room, ENC is the difference between a caller hearing you clearly and a caller hearing traffic.

This distinction is the whole point:

  • Commuting, studying, flying, blocking out a noisy room → you want ANC.
  • Taking a lot of calls, especially outdoors → you want ENC.
  • Both → many current earbuds include both, and this is now common well below premium prices.

Reading the spec sheet honestly

A few things worth knowing when comparing models:

  • Hybrid ANC uses microphones both outside and inside the ear, and generally outperforms designs with only outward-facing mics, because the inner mic checks the result and corrects it.
  • Adaptive ANC adjusts strength based on the environment. Useful, though the benefit is smaller than the marketing suggests.
  • A stated dB figure is measured at the frequencies where the system performs best. It is a peak, not an average.
  • ANC costs battery. Expect meaningfully shorter playtime with it on. Quoted battery figures are often measured with it off — check the footnote.

Some people get ear pressure

A minority feel a sensation of pressure or mild discomfort with ANC active — the brain interpreting the cancellation of ambient pressure variation as something like altitude change. It is harmless, but if you are sensitive to it, look for a model with adjustable ANC strength or a good transparency mode.

What to expect at different prices

ANC has moved down the price range quickly. Budget earbuds now genuinely include it, and it genuinely works — but the gap to premium models is real, and it shows up as how natural the effect sounds, how little hiss is added, and how well transparency mode avoids sounding artificial.

If you are buying at the affordable end, judge the fit and the seal first. A well-sealing budget earbud will beat a poorly fitting expensive one on real-world noise reduction, every time.
