Making Your Phone Battery Last Longer: What Works and What Is a Myth
Much of the battery advice people repeat was true for nickel-cadmium batteries in the 1990s and is wrong for the lithium-ion cells in every modern phone. Worth separating the two.
Myths you can drop
"Fully discharge it before charging." This was real advice for NiCd cells, which suffered a memory effect. Lithium-ion is the opposite: deep discharges stress it. Running to 0% regularly is mildly harmful, not helpful.
"Only charge to 100%, never top up." Partial charges are fine and slightly preferable. There is no penalty for plugging in at 60%.
"Overnight charging destroys the battery." Phones stop drawing current when full. The minor issue is sitting at 100% for hours, which is why optimised charging exists — see below.
"Closing background apps saves battery." Mostly false, and often counterproductive. Modern operating systems suspend background apps already. Force-closing an app you use regularly means a full cold start next time, which costs more energy than leaving it suspended.
What genuinely extends daily battery life
- Screen brightness. The display is usually the single largest consumer. Automatic brightness, and lowering it manually indoors, has more effect than any other setting.
- Screen timeout. Dropping it from two minutes to thirty seconds silently saves a lot across a day.
- Dark mode on an OLED screen. On OLED, black pixels are genuinely off, so this is a real saving. On an LCD it does essentially nothing, because the backlight is on regardless.
- Refresh rate. A 120 Hz display costs meaningfully more power than 60 Hz. Adaptive refresh handles this well; a fixed high rate does not.
- Location access. Set apps to "while using" rather than "always". Background GPS is a heavy and often pointless drain.
- Background refresh. Turn it off for apps you do not need current the moment you open them.
- Poor signal. A phone hunting for a weak tower transmits at maximum power. In a known dead zone, aeroplane mode saves a surprising amount.
What protects long-term battery health
Battery capacity fades with charge cycles and, more importantly, with heat and time spent at extremes of charge.
- Avoid heat above all. Heat is the primary cause of permanent capacity loss. A phone on a car dashboard in summer sun, or charging fast under a pillow, is being damaged in a way a few extra charge cycles never would. Remove thick cases during heavy charging or gaming.
- Use optimised charging. Nearly all modern phones can learn your routine, charge to 80%, hold there, and complete the charge shortly before you wake. This substantially reduces time spent at full charge. Leave it enabled.
- Stay in the middle where convenient. Keeping roughly between 20% and 80% is gentler than routinely cycling 0–100%. Do not be obsessive about it — convenience matters more than a marginal gain.
- Do not store a phone flat. If a device is going in a drawer for months, leave it around 50% charged. A fully discharged lithium cell left for a long period can drop below the voltage at which it can safely be recharged.
- Avoid the cold too. Lithium-ion performs poorly below freezing, and charging a very cold battery can cause lasting damage. Let a cold phone warm up before charging.
When the battery is genuinely worn
Most phone batteries are rated to retain around 80% of original capacity after several hundred full cycles — typically two years or so of normal use. Signs of real wear:
- Sudden percentage drops, particularly a jump from 30% straight to shutdown.
- Shutting down in cold weather while showing charge remaining.
- The phone feeling slower under load, as some phones reduce peak performance to avoid crashes on a degraded battery.
- Any swelling — a case no longer sitting flush, or a screen lifting at an edge. Stop using the phone and have it looked at. This one is not a performance issue.
Both major phone platforms report battery health in settings. If it is well below 80% and the phone is otherwise fine, a battery replacement is usually far better value than a new phone.
Carrying a reserve
None of this changes the fact that heavy days outrun any battery. A modest power bank in your bag is a more reliable solution than aggressive settings that make the phone worse to use. Optimise the settings that cost you nothing — brightness, timeout, background location — and carry a top-up for the rest.
